The movie's plot revolves around a bank robbery gone awry in Brooklyn, New York, on a hot summer day. The central character, Sonny Wortzik, played by Al Pacino, and his partner Sal, played by John Cazale, attempt to rob a local bank to secure funds for Sonny's partner's sex reassignment surgery. However, their plan quickly spirals out of control when the police arrive earlier than expected, and the two find themselves trapped inside the bank with hostages.

As the day progresses, the situation inside the bank becomes increasingly chaotic and tense. Sonny, who initially intended for the robbery to be non-violent, finds himself in a stand-off with the police and becomes an unwitting anti-hero. The media quickly descend on the scene...
