Description
Base painting of the vintage movie poster for ''The Cincinnati Kid'', a 1965 American drama film directed by Norman Jewison and starring Steve McQueen, Ann-Margret, and Edward G. Robinson. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Richard Jessup.
Set in New Orleans during the Great Depression, the story follows Eric "The Cincinnati Kid" Stoner, played by Steve McQueen, a young and talented poker player aiming to establish himself as the best in the game. His aspirations lead him to challenge Lancey "The Man" Howard, portrayed by Edward G. Robinson, a veteran and highly respected poker player.
As the high-stakes poker game between The Kid and The Man unfolds, tensions rise, and the characters' motivations and strategies come to the forefront. Alongside this, The Kid finds himself drawn to the glamorous and seductive Melba, played by Ann-Margret, adding a romantic subplot to the film.
Steve McQueen delivers a charismatic and understated performance as The Cincinnati Kid, portraying him as a cool and confident protagonist with a fierce competitive spirit. Edward G. Robinson brings gravitas and authority to the role of The Man, exuding a sense of wisdom and experience that contrasts with The Kid's youthful bravado. Ann-Margret shines as Melba, imbuing her character with charm, allure, and vulnerability.
"The Cincinnati Kid" is celebrated for its tense and suspenseful poker scenes, which are expertly staged and choreographed to capture the excitement and drama of the game. Director Norman Jewison's stylish direction and evocative cinematography add to the film's overall atmosphere, immersing viewers in the world of high-stakes gambling and intrigue.
While "The Cincinnati Kid" received mixed reviews upon its release, it has since gained a reputation as a classic of the gambling genre, admired for its strong performances, gripping storyline, and memorable characters. Steve McQueen's portrayal of The Kid and the film's dynamic poker sequences continue to captivate audiences, making it a timeless favorite among fans of both classic cinema and the game of poker.

About the artist:
Gilbert ("Georges") Allard (Oct. 15, 1916, Rouvray-Saint-Croix, France—Dec. 7, 2002, Saint-Evertin, France) was a leading French postwar and contemporary poster artist, active from the end of the 1940s through the 1960s.
He painted and signed more than eighty posters for films distributed in France. The French advertising agency Jacques Fourastié produced the majority of his posters.
He often differed from other French poster artists who used graphic elements since he preferred traditional painting techniques. As a result, he used fine brushwork to paint intricate, unexaggerated facial details while adding more dynamic features to the background images, which blended expertly with the key image. In combination, his poster art produced images of the film's essential theme.
An example of those style qualities can be seen in his poster for "Contempt" (aka "Le Mepris," (1963) with Brigitte Bardot, along with other posters, as in "Red River" (1948), "Baby Doll" (1956), and "Doctor Zhivago" (1965).
